Opening Hours

Note that opening hours may sometimes change at short notice. If travelling to visit a library you are advised to check with the library to confirm details.

Term time:

1 October-30 June: Mon-Fri 9.00-19.00, Sat 10.00-16.00

Vacation:

July, August and September: Mon-Fri 9.00-17.00, Sat 10.00-16.00

Closed:

1 week at Christmas, Good Friday through to Easter Monday, 1 week late summer bank holiday, 2 days of St Giles' Fair at beginning of September.

Notes:

The Taylor Institution is the University's centre for the study of Modern European languages and literatures (other than English). The Main Library is the largest specialist research collection in its field in Britain, with a bookstock of over 520k volumes covering the literary and philological aspects of the main European languages (German, Spanish, French, Italian) as well as less commonly-studied ones, (e.g. Portuguese, and the Celtic languages).

Admission and Borrowing Policies

Note that by necessity these policies are much simplified and provided for initial guidance only. Please check with the library for full details.

OU undergraduate students:

Admissions: all. Borrowing: all

5 TAY items for 7 days + 12 MLF items for 7 days. 3 online renewals are permitted. After 14 days, items may be reserved by other readers and should be returned to the Library if requested. Books that are lost or damaged must be paid for(students are reminded that all University debts must be discharged before permission to graduate is given).

OU postgraduate students:

Admissions: all. Borrowing: all

Taught courses: 12 TAY items for 14 days + 12 MLF items for 7 days; Research courses: 12 TAY items for 28 days + 12 MLF items for 7 days. 3 online renewals are permitted. After 14 days, items may be reserved by other readers and should be returned to the Library if requested. Books that are lost or damaged must be paid for (students are reminded that all University debts must be discharged before permission to graduate is given).

OU academic and research staff:

Admissions: all. Borrowing: all

20 TAY items for 56 days + 12 MLF items for 7 days. 3 online renewals are permitted. Books that are lost or damaged must be paid for. After 14 days, items may be reserved by other readers and their return to the Library may be requested.

Others:

Admissions: some. Borrowing: none

The Library is open for reference use to all bona fide researchers, who should apply to the OULS Admissions Office (proof of identity and status will be requested).

Medieval and modern continental European (and related) languages & literatures, predominantly French (including Francophone), German, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese (including Latin American). Also Celtic, Yiddish, Catalan, Gallician etc, Linguistics and Film Studies.
